Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have saddles on hand?

Not generally, the saddles are made as they are ordered.

Can I rope off of this saddle?
Yes.  Though it's not designed as a roping saddle, we have used our saddles to drag elk and firewood out of the hills, and calves to the branding fire.  We have roped occasional bulls and cows.  These saddles will take rough treatment; we test hard to provide a superior product.

What is the guarantee?

Mostly, if you can break it, I can fix it.  I do charge for obvious abuse (Ran over it with a dump truck) Also, parts that wear out, such as strings, stirrup leathers, tapadero covers can be replaced at a reasonable cost.

Do YOU make them yourself?

Yes I do. All of my saddles are hand-made, one at a time by a master craftsman. I shape each tree by hand for a comfortable fit on top for the rider and on the bottom for the horse/mule. All parts are hand-made and assembled.

What do these saddles weigh?

From 32 - 40 pounds, depending on seat length.

What are the slots in the cantle for?

The original intention was tie ropes through these slots to tie on half an elk or deer, or an extra pack. Now, while retaining their original function, they also serve as somewhat of a trademark.

Does this saddle have mule bars?

Not per se... I use a semi-quarter horse spread to the bar and shape it to suit myself.  I am getting a 90% mule fit, and an 80% horse fit.  I can't fit them all, nobody can, no matter what they call their bars.

What are the trees made of?

Ralide, an injection molded plastic.  We have been using these trees since 1989, and never had one broken yet.  We don't use the tree as it comes stock; we shape the bars to fit the animal, and the seats to fit people.

What comes with the saddle?

Each saddle comes with:
-Hand tied trail packer front cinch
-Back cinch
-Full latigos
-Tapadero stirrups (with overshoe sized stirrup)
-Pre-twisted stirrup leathers (so there is little or no break-in period)
-Rawhide trim
-Big Dee rings at all strategic points on the saddle
-Real sheepskin lining
-Hermann Oak skirting
-Blevins Quick-Change stirrup buckles
-Latigo/Halter rope carrier
-Crupper Dee (behind cantle)
-Rawhide lined Santa Fe slots in cantle
-Saddle strings long enough to tie things to

What is the thing on the front left side with the big hole in it?

This is a latigo/halter rope carrier.  It makes for a handy place to tie your halter rope to while riding, so you don't have to tie the lead rope around your horn or to a saddle string.  Also, it can be used in a pinch to carry an axe.

How long does it take to get one?

Approximately 3 months from the time the order is placed.
